Choosing the right Wedding Photographer

Choosing the right wedding photographer for your wedding

At the last count there were approximately 70 wedding photographers in the Swindon area alone. So it is no wonder that choosing one for your wedding is a daunting task.

The majority are very good but there are also some that are “not so good” and there are those where you get exactly what you pay for!

So how do you make sure that you have found the right one for you?

Here are my top tips for finding a great Swindon Wedding Photographer:

  1. Do your research! – Look on the internet, go to wedding fayres and find a wedding photographer whose style suits the type of photography you like. Some photographers will claim to be able to shoot all styles (Reportage, Formal, Documentary, etc.) just to get your booking.  At JMW Imaging we tend to shoot an eclectic mix with John shooting the more formal images added to Michelle’s documentary style, this unusual style works for us and our clients love it.
  2. Once you have trawled the internet and wedding fayres select a few wedding photographers who you think satisfy your criteria and arrange to meet them Face to Face. Their images may be wonderful but you might not hit it off and if you don’t get on you then there is a possibility that you may not get the images you want.
  3. Ask the photographer if you can see a full wedding; they may not be allowed to post the full wedding on line, but when you visit them they should quite happily show you a fully edited wedding for a previous client.
  4. Is the photographer insured? With all the meticulous planning that goes with a wedding it is possible for things to go wrong.  Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance helps to protect both you and the Photographer in the event of a mishap.
  5. Is the photographer qualified? Recently there has been a spate of articles in the national press about poor wedding photography. If a photographer is serious about his craft and the work he produces he is likely to be qualified or accredited to one or more of the professional organisations. This does not mean that a photographer who is not qualified nor accredited to a professional organisation is not any good, but you should have additional peace of mind with the ones that are.

For the record John is a qualified member of the SWPP & The Guild of Professional Photographers; Michelle is qualified with the SWPP & The Royal Photographic Society.

These are just a few pointers to help you find the right Wedding Photographer for you. If you’d like more information about JMW Imaging please contact us.

The Importance of a Wedding Photographer

Increasingly at wedding fayres we hear couples say that they have a friend or relative who is “getting into photography” who is going to take their wedding photos OR we want to keep our costs down so will ask a friend who has a nice camera to do it.

Would you let you friend fix the brakes on your car or repair your central heating just because they have a set of spanners? Errr NO!!

This is fast becoming a disturbing trend. Now we know that everyone is tightening the purse strings these days and some of us are facing difficult times BUT do you really want to cut out one of the most important aspects of your wedding – the photographs?

Photography in its purest form is all about emotion: wedding photography has become its own art form – it’s about seizing the moment, capturing emotion and creating memories. Often the “designated photographer” is also there as a guest so it’s easy for them to get distracted and miss important parts of the day; memories of your special day could be compromised and end in disappointment and tears.

An experienced wedding photographer knows the flow of the wedding day. They know when to anticipate those special candid moments, and how to pose a large wedding group. They are experienced at knowing where to be and when to be there to get the best shots and angles. It also takes a certain personality and finesse to deal with the many people that the photographer will interact with during the day.

A professional wedding photographer does more than just take pictures. Most will spend anywhere from 10 to 20 hours or more carefully editing your wedding day portraits. The beauty of a wedding photographer’s work extends into the way they process their images, not just showing up on your wedding day. They have pride in their quality of work, and their ability to produce images you’ll cherish. They will have also invested a large amount of time and money into they own training keeping up with the latest trends and photographic techniques. A professional will be able to provide you with the high quality images that you will want, not the random, often inferior photographs that should never appear in your wedding photo album.

Proper planning and a focused effort in choosing your wedding photographer will allow one of the best moments of your life to be captured perfectly. So how do you know a photographer is right for you?

Before you hire a photographer check their website and have a look at the quality of their work. Do the images should catch your eye? Do you want to see more?

Arrange to meet up with them and ask questions – you can never ask too many questions. Ask questions about equipment, do their sample albums contain full weddings or just ‘bride and groom’ shots which may have been taken on portfolio building days, other products, travel fees, how long they’ve been in business, do they have any qualifications, are they insured etc. The best method to find out about your photographer is word of mouth and former clients.

It’s a tough market out there at the moment and every photographer will be vying for your business and offer something different so as to be competitive but look at each package and make sure it is what you really want. Regardless of what each photographer offers don’t ever make your decision to hire a professional photographer on price alone. If you hire a budget wedding photographer, you’ll get budget wedding photography. Remember, “cheap is not always good and good is not always cheap!” Beware. There are many hobbyist out there that claim to be full-time devoted wedding specialist.

Your wedding photographs will become permanent reminders of what should be one of the best moments of your life. A photograph has the power to move us to smile, laugh and even cry. Make sure your photographer shares your vision. If you don’t feel comfortable with a person you interview to photograph your wedding, don’t hire them; sometimes personalities just don’t “click”.

Your wedding day is one of those days in your life that can never be repeated, making your wedding photographs are a precious keepsake. They are simply too important to leave to amateurs so hire the best wedding photographer you can afford because those pictures are very important.

This is hopefully a one shot deal, so don’t take any chances.

Lisa & Rick – Wellington Barn Wedding

Saturday 10th July saw JMW Imaging at a relatively new wedding venue near Calne in Wiltshire. Wellington Barn is in its 4th season as a wedding venue but what a little gem it is; set in the middle of the Wiltshire countryside surrounded by fields of corn it is one of the most stunning venues we have had the pleasure of photographing at.

The bride & groom weren’t too shabby either. We have known Rick and his new bride, Lisa, for a number of years now and were honoured when they asked us to photograph their wedding as we knew it would be something a little different – and we weren’t disappointed.

The couple are so in love its contagious, the venue was simply stunning and the last dance – well what can I say other than it was a well planned, well executed and jaw-dropping combination of a rumba and the cha-cha and was brilliant to watch – well done guys xx

Hannah & Jamie – Marsh Farm Hotel Wedding

December 2009

When most people were out doing their last minute Christmas shopping Hannah and Jamie decided to get hitched at Marsh Farm Hotel, Wootton Bassett – in the snow!!

Liz & Stu – Alexandra House Wedding

23rd May 2009 was the special day that Stu & Liz chose to get hitched, the wedding ceremony took place at Holy Cross Church in Chiseldon and the wedding breakfast took place at the lovely Alexandra House.

And as expected it went according to military precision planning … well that was until we realised that Liz had left her wedding bouquet in the house, thankfully the ex-solider chauffeur didn’t mind scaling up some ladders and in through an open window to rescue them. And for someone who is never late, Liz certainly had Stu a little worried when she arrived 25 minutes late!!
